NEW DELHI - Indian unit of Hyundai Motor Co. will begin taking customer orders on Saturday for its small car Eon, seeking to challenge market leader Maruti Suzuki India Ltd Alto model.Eon will be manufactured at Hyundai Motor India Ltd factory near the port city of Chennai, the company said, without giving any date for the introduction of a car in the local market.
Hyundai says the car "is for first-time buyers wishing to purchase a car that is spacious and elegant high on fuel economy."
The company does not reveal the car's engine capacity, or its price, but local media have said Eon is offered with a petrol engine 814-cubic centimeters, and will pay about 250,000 rupees ($ 5,125).
Maruti Alto sells from 232248 rupees a showroom in New Delhi.
Hyundai said Eon was developed by combining the efforts of its research and development in Namyang in South Korea and southern Indian city of Hyderabad.
"We believe that Eon will set a new standard in the Indian market in terms of style, performance, safety and comfort," says HW Park, Executive Director and CEO of Hyundai Motor India.
Hyundai, India's second largest carmaker by sales, makes seven models of cars such as Santro, i10 and i20 hatchbacks, sedans and Verna and Sonata Transform.
